San Diego has a vast array of museums for residents and visitors to enjoy. Balboa Park is home to the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Museum of Man, and the Museum of Photographic Arts. Other San Diego Museums include the San Diego Maritime Museum featuring the Star of India, and the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum, which features the USS Midway. San Diego also features over two dozen public libraries.  

United States military and defense play a significant role in San Diego’s economy. Several military installations and defense contractors are located in and around the city. Marine Corps installations include Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Marine Corp Recruit Depot San Diego, and nearby Camp Pendleton.  San Diego is sometimes known as the birthplace of naval aviation and Naval installations in the area include: Naval Base Point Loma, Naval Base San Diego (also known as 32nd St Base), Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, and Naval Air Station North Island.

Many of the cities so called tourist attractions are popular with tourists and residents alike. Balboa Park, Belmont Amusement Park, the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park, and Sea World San Diego are all popular attractions. The combination of Spanish and Mexican heritage is reflected in the city’s historic sites including the Mission San Diego de Alcala and Old Towne San Diego Historic Park.  Popular annual events held in the area include Comic Con, Farmers Insurance Open Golf Tournament, the San Diego Black Film Festival, and Street Scene Musical Festival.  San Diego is also the home port of many cruise ships.

San Diego residents can attend performances of the San Diego Symphony at Symphony Towers or the San Diego Opera at Civic Center Plaza. The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park produces about 15 plays and musicals each year. But if the performing arts are not your forte, the San Diego Chargers of Qualcomm Stadium and the San Diego Padres of Petco Park both call San Diego home.
